Suddenly and without warning, the long-dried-up river that Neverwinter was built atop an overpass of, became a raging rapid which destroyed the structural support of the outer regions of the city - leaving great chasms to the deadly waters below in their place. Most of the civilians escaped either into the then-inner walls of the city or fled South until the dust settled.
