Story of Origin
Section titled Story of OriginThis is a common; yet likely apocryphal, retelling of the events of the founding of Mor’Thal from the perspective of those who revere The Brightmother and her brothers; Cator and Gavel.
In the Beginning
Section titled In the BeginningThe Brightmother and her brothers settled on Mor’Thal after travelling from planet-to-planet observing naturally occurring life forms. It is said that they found a planet that was eternally dark and cold and every time life spawned to life it was snuffed out shortly after. The Brightmother took pity on the world and gave it light and warmth and while she didn’t eradicate the darkness, she forced it back enough to allow life to spawn.
Her brothers created Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, and Dragons to tame the natural elements. However, it wasn’t until The Brightmother herself created Humans that the world was deemed complete. It was named Mor’Thal after the word used to describe it’s people; Mortals.
The First War
Section titled The First WarLife flourished in the early days of the planet and many new races of Mortal life began to appear. The Gods believed their work was done; preparing to leave for their next venture, until their creations began to conflict and battle with one-another. The Brightmother and her brothers decided to intervene and teach their creations how to co-exist. However the natural darkness that had once consumed the world played on the Mortals’ fears and corrupted a handful of them - leading to the creation of Devils, Demons, and Chromatic Dragons.
The Gods decided to entrust a fraction of their powers to select Mortals who had proven they were like-minded and the first Clerics, Paladins, Sorcerers, and Warlocks were born. The founding Gods also elevated some even more select Mortals to become Gods in their own right.
Following a lengthy combat; the Mortals managed to push back the natural darkness once again and peace was largely restored. The Brightmother and her brothers; having seen the damage their powers could to do the world they’d fought so hard to nurture; reclaimed a large amount of their power and only granted the smallest slivers to loyal Mortals when the time was called for.
For a short while; Mortals had little Magic and the world was peaceful.
Magical Developments
Section titled Magical DevelopmentsSome nomadic Mortals; unhappy with the damage done to the natural wildlife of the planet; listened to the natural energy of the land and were rewarded with Druidic Magic in return.
Around the same time; curious Mortals with good cause managed to understand the underlying magical languages of the world and after careful study - Arcane Magic was invented.
The return of Magic to Mor’Thal scared The Brightmother but her brothers convinced her not to act and for them to instead bestow their blessings more liberally now that their creations had earnt the gift of Magic.
The Mortals were left to learn how to co-exist on their own this time - with less direct intervention from any of the gods than before.
Time and History Keeping
